I’m sorry to say that I believe that the Christian Party candidate may have been mistaken when he suggested that the preacher, a Mr Holes, who was fined in Glasgow for his anti-gay rant, was prosecuted under pro-gay legislation. In fact the man was charged with breach of the peace, a crime that has been in our law in Scotland for hundreds of years. A breach of the peace is committed when one or more persons conduct themselves in a riotous, or disorderly manner, in public, which alarms, annoys or disturbs other people. The anti discrimination laws only cover discrimination in connection with jobs and services. Mr Holes apparently pleaded guilty as charged and was fined according to law.
Excellent broadcast, by the way – the SNP man made a huge mistake in being otherwise engaged. He was very much not engaged with the electorate. Maybe, like Mr Salmond, he felt the other speakers were not senior enough.
Hello,
Just to let you know that I am not a Christian Party candidate. I am simply an Independent candidate who is also a Christian. I was dependent on the media for my information about Mr Holes and I refer you to the Mail on line report of 30 March 2010 (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1262310/Gay-rights-campaigner-condemns-1-000-fine-preacher-said-homosexuality-sin.html) where even Peter Tatchell thought that the Police handling of this issue was heavy handed. I also refer you to the Mail on line article of 3 May 2010 (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/columnists/article-1270880/MELANIE-PHILLIPS-The-Orwellian-logic-thats-turning-faith-Britain-built-crime.html) which supports my contention.
If the information I have gleaned from the media is wrong I would be pleased if you would provide the factual information which seems to be at variance with Peter Tatchell’s understanding of the situation.
Regards,
Murdo A Murray
