Every time the fraudster Karen Spruce appears in court, her address is trotted out as Mill Street, Stornoway. That is what is given out in court and that is what the journalists faithfully report. Yet there is no such street.
A favourite trick of crooks is to give a similar address to a real one and then, if ever challenged, claim it was an honest mistake, guv. Stornoway has a Millar Road and even a Mill Lane. A Mill Street? Nope.
How fortuitous then for Ms Spruce, who diddled Wick Town Improvements Association (WTIA) out of £22,000. Because no one at Stornoway Sheriff Court or the entire law and order establishment has the balls to set the record straight, she will probably not show up as having a bad credit record when searches are made by credit reference agencies.
She could probably walk straight into another post with great financial responsibility – and great risk to other people – if those agencies’ checks are clear. Many cash-strapped organisations still do not do proper Disclosure Checks.
Do the police and court officials read the papers? All who know that it is a fictitious address that has been repeatedly given in court here and on the mainland and are too lazy to do anything about it must share the blame.
Ms Spruce is due back in court in December. Watch this Spruce.
