SNP membership in islands doubles in a fortnight

Press release

The number of card-carrying members of the SNP has more than doubled in the last few weeks in the Western Isles, with more than 300 islanders joining the party since the referendum polling day on 18 September.

Western Isles SNP has welcomed their new members at a time when an unprecedented 50,000 new people throughout Scotland have joined up in the space of a fortnight to bring the total membership of the SNP nationally to almost 78,000.

Alasdair Allan MSP commented: “Nobody could have predicted that there would be this huge surge of people wanting to join the SNP. At one point last week, someone in Scotland was joining the SNP every 15 seconds, and the party’s website could not cope with the traffic.

“This has been reflected locally too, with the party’s membership in the islands swollen to over twice its size of just a few days ago. Over 520 islanders are now members of the SNP, and this total continues to rise by the day.
“What all that tells us is that the referendum campaign has energised and motivated a new generation of people to get real powers for Scotland and to become politically active in a way many have never been before. It tells us that people want to get involved in making that argument throughout the islands and to get the kind of change that Scotland deserves.”

My husband keeps laughing and saying things like “Aye, that’s why they lost” and “Pravda at its worst”, along with ” they kept the Barra boy well hidden”. Me I am fed up of it all and thinking of switching from SNP to UKIP

  2. Sober Island says:

Anyone who believes these figures will be getting wet tonight looking for the fairies at the bottom of the garden. The SNP losers are now getting beyond desperate in their refusal to face the harsh reality of rejection by sensible Scots, and they must be particularly sore at the turning of the nationalist tide in the islands.

  3. Nechtan says:

This sort of rubbish comes from the same source that claimed victory in Point for “yes” by 7 votes- a complete fabrication as was proved when the figures were released and published for all to see on this blog.
No matter how much the “membership swells” the fact remains that the SNP lost the referendum and lost the islands, and pretty soon the MP and MSP will lose their cosy jobs.

  4. Madhatter says:

We didnt really lost the referendum and I for one have joined the SNP and soon we will be free with our own pound and army and all speaking like oor wullie those of us who dont have gaelic. Not long now Braveharts.

  5. Nechtan says:

Can it get any worse for the SNP locally? Yes it can! The German yard commissioned by the SNP to build our new ferry is going bust, and legal issues are likely delay delivery until well into next year. What a shambles.

  6. now that the membership has swollen, would it be too much to expect that they get around to taking down all the yes signs still littering the islands. It smacks of being too much like poor losers, and goes against the campaigns assertion that it would respect the result—oh and l did vote yes but l maintain respect for the outcome

  7. Sober Island says:

Why should the losers take down their rather sad “Yes” signs, littering the landscape and reminding us daily of their failed bully boy tactics?
The SNP know they have a friend right at the top of the council, and he will not move against them in case it creates a domestic!
The SNP have been breaching planning regulations for years now, ever wonder why the planners have not made them remove their signs on council property?
