Homemade boat sailor thought to be missing in Broad Bay

LEWIS 01:00 – Coastguards say they are searching for a man they believe may be missing at sea in a small homemade vessel off the Isle of Lewis.

The man left Brevig in Back in the tiny boat at 7am on Tuesday. Concerned relatives called coastguards at 8pm when he failed to return. They say the missing man did not give details of where he intended to go and he does not have a radio or mobile phone with him.

Carol Collins, the Stornoway Coastguard watch manager, said: “The Stornoway-based Coastguard rescue helicopter, Stornoway RNLI lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from across the Isle of Lewis, police units and Hebrides Inland Rescue are all currently searching for the missing man.

“Sadly, we have not found any sign of him or his boat yet.”

The missing homemade boat is blue and black, three metres long and has an outboard motor.

After 1am, the Stornoway lifeboat was searching between Back and Tiumpan Head at the entrance to Broad Bay while the coastguard helicopter was in the Minch east of Point.
