I was off Island a month ago. When I left the price was £139.9 for unleaded in Stornoway, whilst on the Mainland it was £129.9. Three weeks later when I came back and the price on the mainland had dropped to £128.9 and shock horror in Stornoway the price had actually risen to £142.9. Then up it went again and now yet again.
Last Tuesday the price was £1.,47,9 half an hour later it was up to £1.48.9,
since July, what is usually the holiday season the cost has continually risen.
Why????????????
DC, civic fathers at the Whitehouse will say the same as the MP and MSP, much ineffectual bleating, zero meaningful action.
Whatever happened to the Fair Fuel Solutions ?
Another Labour Junkie or is it another Labour Monkey ? Remember Mr Darling telling us that people would leave Glasgow to fill up in the rural areas if the 5p saving was made. What has our council done, nothing other than to run away when the question is asked. Maybe it suits senior councillors not to have competition.
Tina completely agree, that was the point I was originally making but Monkey thought it was a chance to attack the MP and MSP. I have raised the fuel problem with both of them and I know from their response it is a issue which they are working hard on.
How can the civic fathers in the Whitehouse say anything when their leader is the biggest profiteer of all. Anyone wondering where the council vehicles fuel up in Stornoway? I’ll give you three guesses. If all parties involved in the supply of fuel are as innocent of exploiting the people of Lewis as they claim, why are they so reluctant to expose the actual culprits by being transparent with the wholesale prices?
How is it that the filling station in Barvas is consistently several pence cheaper than Stornoway?
I hear that Dallas will soon be back on our screens. From what I can see, the ongoing intrigue of a collection of oil men operation a price fixing cartel has never left us in Lewis.
DC, I am overjoyed that the MP and MSP are “working hard” on this issue, could we have a progress report from them please?
I hope, perhaps in vain, that their report does not consist of blaming the previous lot, after all their party, the SNP, has been in charge in Scotland since 2007, and the Labour party were replaced by the Tory/Libdems over two years ago.
Any chance of action at parliamentary level any time soon?
Why don’t you make an appointment and ask them. You are right, it is a long while since Labour was in power, I wonder why ? Maybe peole like myself woke up and stopped voting Labour. If Labour were still in power there would be little point in raising it. Remember the Labour Chancellor Darling and his pals Brown and Blair thought it was funny. Remember their reaction when Macneil raised it. They had the power to fix it, but ignored it
I was in Inverness at the weekend. A litre of petrol at Morrisons was £1.29.9 and a litre of diesel was £1.35.9. How come it costs so much in Lewis? Does the fuel not come off the same boat?!
DC: The people who sell gas and fuel at such “reasonable prices” , would be the same people who have the “only” boat that would supply the fuel to TESCO if they were to be able to sell here in Stornoway…..see how bad it get’s !!.
Let’s have these local councillors who support the present system of no-competition held to account.
Scott if we fight for a better deal we won’t get it and you’re right lets hold these people to account if they are stopping fair competition. I’m sure the likes of TESCO has strong bargaining powers, much better than we have today.
noriesmith and others are so naive. Does he not realise that the garages make nothing from fuel, and that they make their millions from selling papers, DVDs, catapults and sandwiches????
I would doubt that the filling stations in Stornoway are selling fuel at no profit. That may be so for some of the more remote stations the further down the islands you travel, but I recall an OFT report which said that the Stornoway stations have fuel sales comparable to some of the urban outlets round Inverness. I am still waiting for our MP and MSP to do somthing about this, other than writing letters…….
Labour Monkey Subsidy why didn’t Darling do something, at a trole of a pen he could have fixed it. I don’t see our petrol; vemdors not making a profit from petrol. They flaunt too much of their wealth not to be. Why is it you never get the garage owners and the fuel distributor at the same public meeting ?? I think everybody knows.
I have now got two vouchers from Tesco for 5p off a litre of fuel. Can’t use them though as I won’t be off Island until after they expire! Great!
One thing is for sure – It doesn’t matter who carries the fuel to the Islands, If Tesco open a station here it is Tesco that will dictate the price not anyone else, after all they could buy their own boat if they wanted to, or even Scottish Fuels for that matter.
The sooner Tesco open a petrol station the better as far as I am concerned. I did not vote for any councilors who I regarded as in it for themselves, it is a shame others did.
angry motorist I’m more than happy to listen to your action plan.
During the run up to the May election the current councillors ignored the rising cost of fuel. Angus Campbell and his pals talked about many things
but didn’t say anything about fuel. I know we are stuck with him for the next five years., it’s crazy. How he can be the council leader when we have a major problem with fuel costs. Obviously nothing is going to happen for another five years.
ACTION – with the help of all you lovely posters out there to spread the word we can gauge public opinion. I have created an ipetition in support of Tesco proceeding to open a filling station in Stornoway. It can be found at:
(Remember to change the dot with a real one until Mr X posts it as a link,
Maybe Iain could put the widget link to the petition in a prominent place on his excellent blog?)
I look forward to seeing some of our councillors supporting the petition.
Here we go again!

In a word – Corruption!! the bane of island life!
What do our civic fathers ay the Whitehouse have to say ?

Ian is right . People must be happy . I Otherwise they would be out on the streets protesting .
DC – Maybe it has something to do with senior councillors owning fuel stations!!

Well said Noriesmith, We are just after an election and yet we still have the Texan Cowboys in charge.

The question is – Why don’t we have a large store that sells petrol ? Is someone stopping it ? If so, who ?

perhaps everyone should write to tesco and tell them we are going to shop in the co-op until they open a filling station
And there goes another 1p on a litre today.
