Is it profiteering or is it proof of fraud? Unleaded is now 10p a litre cheaper at Back than at the council leader’s pumps supplied by Scottish Fuels. If you are concerned, call the Office of Fair Trading. They would love to hear from you

There is fury among filling station operators in Stornoway. Gordon Diesel is now selling unleaded at 133.9p – that’s a whopping 10p less per litre than our own council leader.
Gordon’s prices are now 15p per litre cheaper than they were two months ago. Think hard about that and work out who is responsible for the rip-off. Scottish Fuels say it is retailers like our own council leader. Are they right?
The three town retailers are now seriously jittery. They were assured a few weeks ago by Scottish Fuels that they had sorted out Gordon Diesels, insiders tell me. Lawyers letters would stop him embarrassing the cartel and the Irish convicted crooks who run Scottish Fuels. So what has happened? Gordon has just installed a new bigger 70,000-litre tank and cut his prices again. He said today he will also be importing fuel direct from the mainland when the spot price is right and he will pass on the savings.
Manor Filling Station is rumoured by sources to also be close to severing ties with Scottish Fuels. Engebret is looking for a better deal from them and Angus Campbell is not saying anything but apparently has said to others that he is not prepared to cut his prices again to get back the custom he is losing to Gordon. A clever ploy or maybe financial suicide?
Sales at the three Stornoway stations are now about to plummet again if they don’t slash their prices. One is already losing business more than the others. Things are about to get really interesting. Everyone should support the retailer giving the best honest deal. It’s that simple. The greedy ones supporting the fraud and lies of Scottish Fuels and the status quo deserve to suffer. So get to Back early. Gordon is getting more diesel pumps installed this week but still expect queues. Another interesting development is that some of Scottish Fuels own staff are now privately admitting they are not happy with what their bosses are doing to the islands. Sorry, guys, if you consider that an indiscretion but I shall not publish any names – unless, of course, you want me to.

  1. Well done to FFS and Gordon for standing up to this!

  2. I have not filled up in Stornoway for weeks now and I am astonished when I see anyone filling their vehicles in Stornoway. They deserve to be boycotted.

If the council is looking for suggestions on how to save some money then they should start by getting rid of half the councilors, including the leader and also make sure that all council vehicles fill up at Gordon’s.

  3. Derek ( Inverness )

How much more proof do they need that you guys are being ripped off ? This is a classic example of what competition will do to stop the ripoffs . Shame the leader of your council is the one with the blinkers still on . Who voted for this guy – by the way.

  4. Derek sadly some folk will vote for a rock as long as it is originates from Lewis or has Lewis connections, no more than 6000years old and static on Sundays.

Personally I have made the detour to Back for the past 4 weeks and will not return to a town garage again – bearing in mind i never used one of the Great Leaders sites any way, he has always been in favour of the Cartel. Not only is the fuel at a good price GD runs a nice little shop with cheerful staff. So even more of my pocket money is going into his till.

Shame is that the cartel will wriggle out of any accusations as they always have – some one else will be blamed.

  5. If Angus Campbell and Engy do not follow them down , they will both be out of business in three months . Their strategy of refusing to compete only works when the market is rigged and the competition is fake, which of course has been the case for years. Now that the truth is out there, they must move or die.

  6. I have just fired off the letter Gordon Maclennan has asked us ALL to send to the OFT (Hebrides News), and am more than happy to support his call. I hope everyone will support his call and spread the word.

  7. My Car Runs on Chip Fat

Gordon Maclennan has provided a cut and paste letter for all to send to OFT (yes you will have to put your name and address on it but Gordon and FFS have done all the hard work for us – so its the least we can do), available on Hebrides News.
Would suggest you get it copied now before some chump asks for it to be removed.

  8. Keep the Union

I stopped the car at Spar on Saturday got out to have a look at the price. Then when I was sure I was spotted by the staff looking at the price jumped in the car and headed down to Gordon’s. I saved about £5 for travelling 6 miles down the road.

I have also e-mailed Gordon’s letter to the OFT.

  9. James Macdonald

Why do people keep praising FFS for Gordon having the balls to stand up to Scottish Fuels & switching to Highland Fuels? I bet they had no input into him deciding to switch suppliers but want to take credit for it.

  10. John Maclennan

I just coughed a mouthful of tea across the room after reading your Blog Mr. X, as I imagined the full force of GB Oils legal team (and perhaps others nearer home) being unleashed for your potentially Libellous entry.
However on reflection a Libel must be both demonstrably harmful to the party/parties involved and Untrue. Clearly your entry is harmful.

  11. I haven’t been near the rip-off merchants in town since Gordon started selling fuel at a reasonable price. I also make use of his shop at the filling station.

With a couple of 4x4s to feed, I reckon that I save between £7 and £10 a time just for making a short trip to Back. I will also continue going to Back in the future, even if the rip-off merchants come to their senses and drop their prices.

  12. The big question is now surely whether, in these days of austerity and council cutbacks, will all the council vehicles that currently fill up at their leader’s pumps now be sent down to Gordon’s to fill up there and save the council quite a significant sum? Let’s all hold our breath shall we?

  13. FFS have done a fantastic job keeping up awareness of what is the ultimate scam-supported by councillors including free church ones . They were not afraid to criticize the OFT and others until they did something. James Macdonald and his mates feel they need to attack FFS to divert attention from the inaction of the SNP elected people who should have been leading the fight. Sorry Jim-it’s not working. There will be more criticism by vested interests but we all now see the truth-about everything .

  14. Well James Macdonald FFS have been keeping up the pressure and putting in a lot of work and effort for over a year now, which is more than most folk

  15. James Macdonald

FFS will also be using it as a publicity stunt to criticise SNP & try bigging up Calum Ian @ FFS to get him back into power either as a councillor or MP as everyone in FFS are labour strong.

  16. Oh yes definitely seems like that. Hmmmmm why now didn’t I think that? I haven’t seen any mention of any of the political parties in any of their statements. It’s jerks like you Mr Macdonald with your narrow-mindedness that are failing the community, all I said was good on them for the work they have done as I’m sure most people will agree.
What Gordon is doing is an amazing thing and a huge well done to him for making a difference and sticking to his guns.
These guys deserve the support of the community for what they are doing.

  17. John Maclennan

Surely this is a cross party matter? and all political parties ought to back any group such as FFS or individual such as Gordon Diesels in their endeavours to secure a fairer fuel price in these islands. Many folk like me couldn’t give a hoot about political point scoring by whatever party in this issue.

  18. It will be interesting to see how many people will carry on supporting Gordon Diesel when the price in town comes into line with his prices which it will at some point
Gordon deserves the support of motorists but unfortunately that support will dwindle when the prices come into line
Lewis People have short memories and will soon forget who was responsible for the drop in fuel prices , same old story different commodity

  19. It’s a shame that James Macdonald can’t take his Salmond coloured blinkers off for a moment and take the trouble to read or view the statements by FFS From what I’ve seen or read all they have done is kept this debate alive and then praise Gordon Diesel (whatever his political allegiances are) for having the cajones to break away from what looks very much like a cartel.
Perhaps the FFS does appear as a Labour Party dominated group but as far as I know it is open to all and would welcome input from our MP and MSP and their supporters.Have they been in touch James?I ask as I really don’t know.
I totally agree with John Maclennan and I.D.M-that this is an issue that goes way beyond any party loyalties-and will be interesting to take a look at the latest census figures once they are released..Dont think it will make for good reading.

  20. I live 20 miles away from Back, but would still go there to fill up even if the prices were only a couple of pence cheaper, and will certainly keep going even if the town fuel stations do drop their prices. A man who is willing to take on the giants and also stand up to the status quo deserves every ounce of support.
    Good on ya Gordon!

  21. There is no doubt that FFS has played a part in this, but it is only a minor part. Of course, any little success that Labour is associated with has got to seen as world shattering. The young lady who iniated the FFS before being frozen out accomplished much more on her own.

  22. Monkey Subsidy

So open minded the wind blows through!

  23. Ian X has now been informed who James Macdonald really is. False name , false email address. Appalling credit record .He should be kcked off . No surprise its him .

  24. Leask’s Filling Station, Lerwick, Shetland Isles (owned operated by Scottish Fuels)
    148.9 Auto-diesel /Derv
    140.9 Unleaded

    Site is branded Gulf
The Gulf brand in the UK is licensed to GB Oils Ltd, 302 Bridgewater Place, Birchwood

  25. home heating oil supplied by Scottish Fuels is usually 3.9p a litre dearer, fuel taken from same tank as Highland Fuels so who is making the extra profit? Are we on the island paying all the profits of Scottish Fuels.

  26. Very handy comparison site…see link
    http://www.petrolprices.com/
also you may have heard reference to PLATTS prices
Platts License Oil Data to Fuepricesonline.com…see link

  27. It says a lot for the council fuel task force. Should they not be leading this cause.

  28. Agreed, OM, was this task force not set up by a certain Transportation Chief in the last council, the one that agreed all the cuts in school transport? Step into the light , Manford, Leader of the current SNP group, for it is he!

  29. I think you will find you’re wrong. It makes no difference who it was, this council is full of numpties, look at the castle contract. This independent labour council under docus are a disgrace .
