Police have launched a new appeal to identify the body of a mystery man found on the Isle of Skye in September last year. The man’s body was found on the shore at Kyleakin, not far from the Skye Bridge, after 9am on Monday, September 9.
It is thought a reported sighting of the man before his death is genuine. It was at about 6.45am the day before when a motorist on the Broadford to Kyleakin road saw a man walking along the verge half a mile away from the bridge.
He was walking towards it and matched the description given, including the rucksack.
Since then, 24 possible names were given to the police but all of these have now been ruled out. Officers are meanwhile are in regular contact with missing people organisations and police forces throughout the UK and abroad.
With no clear leads emerging, Police Scotland asked the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at Dundee University to help identify the mystery man. Their experts in forensic and craniofacial anthropology and human anatomy now say the dead man is older than police originally thought.
A new artist’s impression based on information from the police has been produced which may lead to recognition from the public and assist the investigation. A new impression of the tattoo on the man’s arm has also been released.
It was initially thought he may have been in his 30s. However, the experts think he is actually between his mid-40s to early-60s. He had short dark greying hair and a moustache. His face and forearms were suntanned with freckles on his forehead, across his nose and on his arms.
The mystery man is Caucasian (white), 5’10” tall (179cm), of slim build and weighed about 13 stone (85 kg).

His teeth were in poor condition. A number of the teeth on top and bottom jaws were broken or missing. It is thought that the man was left-handed and a smoker.
-
On the left forearm are two self-penned tattoos. The first is of a cross or ‘T’ symbol measuring 2cm x 1.7cm and the second a ‘G’ symbol – or maybe the number 5 – measuring 1.5cm x 2cm.
When taken from the water, the mystery man was wearing:
- Brown ‘Atlantic Bay’ bodywarmer
- Blue ‘Everlast’ hooded top
- Grey ‘Everlast’ t-shirt
- Dark blue ‘Burton Menswear’ jeans
- Leather ‘Levi’ belt
- Black ‘Lonsdale@ boxer shorts
- Black ‘Patrick’ socks
- Black ‘Nike’ training shoes
On his left wrist was a -
- Chrome ‘Sekonda’ watch with blue face
- Blue/red ‘Help for Heroes’ wristband
He wore a black and red ‘Reebok’ backpack which was obviously very full. It contained:
- Black ‘Lonsdale’ showerproof jacket
- 2 pairs of black ‘Lonsdale’ boxer shorts
- 1 pair of black ‘Umbro’ socks
- Blue ‘Umbro’ t-shirt
- Blue with white striped ‘Adidas’ tracksuit trousers
- White ‘Lonsdale’ t-shirt
- White Real Madrid ‘Adidas’ top
- NY red and blue reversible beanie hat
- Pair of dark blue ‘Burton Menswear’ jeans
- Black Celtic football top (with Carling written on the front)
- A single Yale-type key attached to a ‘Stanley’ fob
- Cigarette papers
- Cigarette filter tips
- Blister pack of Zydol 50mg capsules
- 2 pairs of shoelaces (new)
Police insist that they still have no reason to believe there is anything suspicious about the death.
A spokesman said: “If you know the man please contact Police Scotland on 101. Officers can quickly process names in relation to the inquiry so if you think there is any possibility the deceased is somebody you know, please get in touch.”
