New harbourmaster takes over at Stornoway

Marine engineer Tony Morrison is the new harbourmaster at Stornoway. He is also a certificated RNLI coxswain currently serving as Depute Cox on the Stornoway Lifeboat and he and his family live in Sandwick.

Mr Morrison succeeds Peter Read, who left at the beginning of the year, and is now working as a second officer on a floating hotel in the North Sea.

Tony Morrison’s working life has focused largely around Stornoway Harbour and he already has many years of experience in dealing with a significant number of the port authority’s customers and stakeholders.

Captain Robert Frater, the chairman of Stornoway Port Authority, said he was delighted that Tony had accepted the position and he and the board very much looked forward to working with him as part of the team at Stornoway Harbour.

For once a reasonably sound appointment, here’s hoping he gets more support form “the new” CEO than Peter did for the last one. Not hearing much on that appointment either!

  2. Another truaghan says:

A very good appointment, someone who has a working understanding of what the Port Authority is about and will work with the stakeholders.

  3. STORNOWEGIAN says:

Excellent Appointment – Tony is a man who knows Stornoway Harbour ” inside out” and is highly respected in the community.

  4. TarmodSona says:

Superb appointment! Frater and his cronies now have an electrician and an engineer to repair the Pathfinder and try and recover some of the money they invested in it. Frater must be planning to go back ‘on the tools’ to do the Harbour master job.

I think Frater was mis-quoted here. What he meant was that he was delighted that ANYONE had accepted the job as harbour master as this Board has mismanaged the port to the extent that any post to do with the harbour is a poisoned chalice. No one wants to be a Board member any more. I wonder why? This once prestigious post of harbourmaster has been shunned by the hundreds of qualified Masters in the Western Isles. A highly professional position has been opened up to tradesmen from Stornoway to Kathmandu. This will be the period of change quoted by John Booley in a recent press release. The front runner for the Chief Exec job will most likely be a joiner!
Best of luck Tony. They welcomed Peter Read in the same manner, then failed to support him.
