Stornoway Wind Farm Submits Proposal Changes lwp logo

Statement

Following extensive public consultation last year, the Stornoway Wind Farm has submitted plans to make changes to the original layout of the wind farm to the Scottish Government. The developers, Lewis Wind Power, are seeking to vary the existing Section 36 consent to construct and operate the 36-turbine wind farm near Stornoway.

The variation application is being submitted to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit and seeks to make the following changes:

• Movement of 17 turbines by up to 50m and 8 turbines by between 50m and 147m to avoid areas of deep or wet peat;
• Modifying access tracks to avoid areas of wet peat and a new crossing over the River Creed;
• Minor revisions to the site boundary to avoid an area of deep peat and to reroute the track around the proposed salt barn;
• Increase the maximum tip height of the wind turbines to 145m, an increase of 1.5m.

Lewis Wind Power consulted the public in the autumn of last year on their views on the proposed changes through a series of exhibitions and promotional adverts. Notices informing the public about the submission of the variation have also now been issued in the local and national media for information.

Darren Cuming, project director for Lewis Wind Power said: “The application to the Scottish Government to make these changes to the original design is part of the on-going work we’re carrying out on the project and reflects the more detailed studies we have done of the site.

“The public consultation events that we held last year on the proposed layout changes were largely positive and any comments received by attendees have been reflected in our application to the Scottish Government.

“The changes will allow the project to avoid areas of particularly deep or wet peat and by varying the application to allow for slightly higher blade tips, it gives the project the option of installing turbines which are both more powerful and efficient than those which might have been available when we submitted our original consent application.

“We’d like to thank all those who took part in our consultation last year and we will continue to liaise with local people on progress.”
