Graffiti daubed on Free Church

A man was detained by police in Stornoway on Friday evening after a church in the town was daubed with graffiti. It followed the appearance of the words “Temple of Evil” in black letters sprayed near the main door of the Free Church of Scotland on Kenneth Street.

Passers-by said police arrived at the church around 6.30pm and a man, thought by the onlookers to be using walking sticks, was taken away. It is not known if he was caught in the act.

A spokeswoman for Stornoway Police confirmed a man had been detained following an incident at the church, which is thought to have one of the largest congregations in the country. She said inquiries were ongoing.

The minister, Reverend Iver Martin, who is currently on sick leave, said: “It’s very sad.”  Church volunteers were hard at work later scrubbing off the words which several locals said they found “offensive”.

He has the right to Free speech. but what he did was criminal Damage I wonder how many others harbour the same inclinations but keep their thoughts to themselves!!

  3. A great opportunity for the kirk to show Christian love for an enemy!

  4. You mean as in turn the other wall?

  5. What’s this “awaiting moderation” business?

  6. It is sometimes necessary for me to start approving comments before they appear particularly when a wave of inappropriate comments are made – as in the last few days.

Agree ,with Iain Turnbull If ! the big Man ,comes back ,3 weeks on saturday ,where will he go ?,Rome ?,Salt lake city?,Mecca !! It might surprise you and me if he did ,St Giles ,Edinburgh, or God,s House in town.. There is only One Church ,and which one is it ?

  8. Iain, Can’t you just moderate the ones that have proven that they need moderation?

As for Christian Love for enemies How about demonstrations of love by those for those extreme branches of “the Church” represented on These Islands to those closer to home (where charity is supposed to begin)!! They could start with “Suffer the little children” insteand of “Let the little children (& the rest of us) Suffer”!!!!!
