SNP group congratulates Macneil

[News-Ticker]

STATEMENT

The SNP Council group at CnES joins in the chorus of congratulations to Angus Brendan Macneil in his successful re-election to a third term as member of Parliament for the Western isles.

We also thank him for his considerable support on the SNP group’s campaigns on important island issues such as :

  • Coastguards
  • Tug
  • Interconnector
  • Unfair fuel prices
  • Improving Broadband
  • Improving Mobile signals
  • Fuel poverty
  • The islands retaining the Crown Estate revenues

We thank him unreservedly for the great number of people he has helped individually throughout our islands – a matter which featured strongly in constituents’ responses during our recent campaigning.

We will be inviting our MP to the council to discuss matters such as homeworking and community empowerment embracing the opportunities and challenges the islands face in the coming years.

This is similar to congratulating the sole four-legged nag that entered and won a one- horse-race.

Are the SNP councillors now going to give Macneil an extra pail of oats as a prize ?

Just a brief comment on a couple of these “important island issues” mentioned:

Improving Broadband: What improving broadband? It may well have improved in Stornoway, but it has yet to improve in most other areas of the islands. On a good day I get 1.3 Mbps download speed, though on a bad day it can go down to around 240 kbps. To make matters worse, there are many areas where the situation is a lot worse. What happened to all this high speed broadband they were going on about? I suppose they have covered themselves by not mentioning in which century this will happen.

Improving Mobile signals: What improving Mobile signals? I, like many, many others have such a poor signal that, on a good day, I can actually send and receive texts on my Mobile. It took me three months to receive a photograph sent to my Mobile, and I gave up after two months of trying to send a photograph to someone else. They are going on about a 4G service, whereas many of us are lucky to get a 1G or 2G service. Then again, they haven’t mentioned in which century we can expect to get a 4G service.

If MacNeil wants to know about how island communities can actually provide decent Mobile and broadband services he should take a trip to the Faroes (he can claim for that on expenses) to find out how it is done.

I don’t know if MacNeil intends to do anything for the islands over the next five years or whether he only intends to feather his own nest; perhaps he could provide a statement to Iain X setting out what his plans, if any, actually are.

Oh my Lord, are they for real?
The MP is reactive not pro-active.
