Mystery foreign body seals fate of new ferry

The new ferry Loch Seaforth broke down again on Thursday and the ageing ferry Isle of Lewis had to take over again.

CalMac was being deliberately evasive saying that “a foreign body” had got into the bow thruster. That unhelpful claim gave the green light for the rumours to start. Also, sources were secretly claiming that a shellfish creel had done the damage.

Meanwhile, the old salts round the town were having none of it and did not believe a creel could have caused the problem. Then another source said he’d heard it was a seal in the bow thruster. We don’t know which yarn to believe so we went looking for evidence …
