Macrae demands action over gritting

Councillor D J Macrae has written to. John Mackay, Chair of the Comhairle’s Transportation Committee, asking him to get his Committee to carry out an urgent review of the Council’s current gritting policy.

Cllr Macrae said: “Every motorist in the Western Isles knows that the policy is not working, and many motorists and providers of essential services are putting their lives in danger daily on ungritted roads.
“There have been many incidents since the policy was put in place last year, it is now time for the Comhairle to take some action before even more serious accidents take place. I will be raising this serious issue at the next round of Council meetings at the end of this month, but I expect action well before then.
“It’s about time that council listened to the emergency services and the growing concerns from the public
I hope common sense will prevail and I hope all the other councillors will support this move.”

Laxdale School head suspended

Headteacher Sandra Macleod

A long-running series of disputes among members of staff at an island school has resulted in the suspension of the head teacher as a bitter row over her alleged bullying of colleagues boiled over. After months of sick leave following previous rows, Sandra Macleod returned recently to take over the reins again at Laxdale School, near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

After an eventful few weeks during which members of staff again made complaints about bullying and harrassment, Mrs Macleod was ordered home on Friday pending an investigation. Sources at the school said it had been a very difficult time for all concerned and that everyone was working to stop the rows having any effect on the 229 pupils, many of whom are taught in Gaelic.

A parent said: “We have been told that her suspension is a neutral act and does not imply wrongdoing by anyone. Her removal will allow a proper investigation to be carried out.”  It is understood that there are also counter allegations to those against Mrs Macleod.

Mrs Macleod is a daughter of Neil Galbraith, a former director of education and acting chief executive of Western Isles Council, who was also at the centre of many bitter controversies.

When Mr Galbraith, now the chairman of Western Isles Health Board, retired from the council in 2001, Angus McCormack, past president of the Educational Institute of Scotland and former assistant head of the Nicolson Institute, said “the negative hand that lay on education in the Western Isles for years has gone”.

A spokesman for Western Isles Council insisted that the authority had no comment to make on the suspension of Mrs Macleod.
