Homophobe Iain Macdonald of Miavaig, Uig, replies on Hebrides News after I criticised his earlier letter, which was removed after several complaints by open-minded readers, in which he said he would rather sit by a septic tank than share accommodation with gay people.
Much of what Macdonald now writes is a desperate attempt to excuse his pro-discrimination stance – as usual with such bigots, he portrays himself as a victim – yet he feels entitled to his foul views and pet hatreds because other islanders sufer from the same “inner revulsion” he so publicly admits to. There were many in pre-war Germany who supported Hitler. Didn’t make that right either.
Clever fellow that he is, he even tries to rewrite the textbooks on homophobia. Whereas the best brains in the world say it’s linked to the dominance of ‘machismo’ culture – fuelled by all the world’s most extreme hatred-based religions – as well as severe personal feelings of being unloved which causes sufferers to be jealous of anyone who is in love, Macdonald has wild theories of his own.
The Campaign To End Homophobia defines personal homophobia as feelings of fear, discomfort, dislike, hatred, or disgust with same-sex sexuality. That should end the discussion on what Macdonald actually is.
He does manage to say sorry but still drags up irrational nonsense over sodomy. What if the gay guests gave a written undertaking not to undertake that particular practise? Would that be OK? Does the Macdonald ban extend to non-gays who practise it? Would he encourage accommodation providers to spy on guests to make sure they were doing it right?
A bizarre assertion, albeit tiresomely dramatised, that a male must inherit a strong aversion towards homosexuality in order to develop into a heterosexual is not funny and it’s not clever. It’s just a lie.
Macdonald’s glorious, unbridled ignorance even leads him to speculate that I’m an athiest. Standing up to the various splintered, in-fighting, self-seeking sects – what passes for organised religion in these parts – which impose their mediaeval rituals on others, does not make me an athiest. Whereas he claims to be undecided on spiritual matters himself, the arrogant philosopher makes out he knows my conscience. He is as mistaken about that as he is about everything else. Utterly pathetic.
His attempt at self-justification leads him to dream up many unfathomable, irrelevant questions. I’ll answer the one in paragraph 2 like this: if the conscience, belief or mental deficiency of any B&B operator means they cannot operate their business without practising the same type of anti-gay discrimination pioneered by the Nazis, they really should use their talents to do something else.
Keen to tell everyone he was in the hostel with me, Macdonald was obviously untroubled by reports over the years of the sudden deaths of some of our contemporaries. It is not that long since a family member of one such schoolmate told me he died wrestling with his sexuality after being made to feel condemned to hell by one certain, hateful, hurtful, unforgiving island minister.
So, yes, what Macdonald says is true. He is certainly not alone in nursing irrational fears and hatreds that threaten to destroy the tourism industry of these self-dubbed holy islands in one fell swoop. It is obvious he is comforted that fellow haters are even to be found in the Labour Party.
Meanwhile, Mr Macdonald shouldn’t fret about the possibility of getting an invitation to a gay wedding. The gay people I have spoken to in recent days – including some with Uig connections – aren’t likely to put him on their lists. Some said they’d rather sit by a leaking septic tank.
Keep a place for me by the gay friendly septic tank whilst you’re at it.

Ignoring the rant by dzul above, is it not hilarious that the effect of Mr Macdonald posting another letter on Hebrides News referring to gay people and B&Bs, is a whole column of links to adverts for gay friendly holiday resorts and accommodation. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing!
I’m not gay and I’m glad that I don’t have to go through the inner torment that these poor souls very often have to endure. Life for many of us is difficult enough without having to face the pains of who you are and why you are so different. With the proper support and understanding gays can come to terms with their differences and go on to be pillars of our society.
I find it strange that homosexuality appears to be worse than paedophilia or do these people the two to be one and the same.
The poor man from Uig has a serious problem and needs help like those similar minded critics.
Having read his letter Mr Macdonald needs to recognise the difference between Political Correctness and Discrimination Law.
Political Correctness would require you not to call Homosexual Men a bunch of Poofs!
Discrimination Law will criminalise you should you refuse Homosexuals to use your guesthouse. That’s because it is illegal not just about being insensitive.
Discrimination Laws along with most of UK and European Laws have come about or have been based on biblical teachings:
When asked which is the greatest commandment, Jesus replied,
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” [Matt22:37-40]
Now maybe I have misunderstood this one – but to me that would suggest it is against one of God’s commandments to discriminate.
So Mr Postie Macdonald is a homophobe without the encouragement of any church. That just makes it worse, he must be horrible. Is he in the BNP.
I have removed several attempted postings because of the foul language used. Even if you disagree profoundly with Mr Iain Macdonald – or with me – please do not show yourself up by resorting to the language of the gutter. Thank you.
Iain Maciver
Mr Iain Maciver, youve caused a debate in our house – again. My wife agrees with you but thinks your refernces to Nazis were unnecessary. I think they are necessary and appropriate. We fought a war from 1939 to 1945 to stop people with views like Mr Macdonald’s telling us what to do. we are grateful there is someone willing to risk being targeted by the many homophobes in this community and prepared to say they are wrong. Well done sir
I don’t know how old the “Uig homophobe” is, but perhaps he should be taken to the state of New Hampshire in the USA for a dose of this treatment, as prescribed by The Onion: http://www.theonion.com/articles/new-hampshire-passes-law-forcing-old-people-to-wat,6770/
That’s naughty Arnish Lighthouse, you should tell people what- The Onion-is. I really feel for dzul, think you need help. You are in danger of getting more hits than Angus if this keeps up Iain
I wonder if those mentioned B+B owners will question a hetrosexual couple whether they are married or not? Surely that is as valid an issue for them as “aggressive homosexuals”… as the christian faith is against sex before marraige in all circumstances… do they check marrage certificates upon arrival?
I agree with Mr Moir. It shows how ridiculous people like Macdonald of Uig really are. Mr Macdonald complains that his views on homosexuals are only his opinions and nothing for anyone else to get alarmed about. Why then did he go to all that effort of writing out his nasty opinions and sending them to Hebrides News for publication. If he knows they are the result of a mental flaw why did he not keep them to himself like any self-respecting bigot would do.
At one stage, he seems to admit that he is indeed suffering from some sort of mental illness which causes his revulsion. He then goes on to triumphantly claim that most of the island population have the same illness. Well we know about the awful Reverend Coghill and three quarters of the High Church but who else says we should not be alarmed.
I am very alarmed to be living among such intolerant people. Especially when we see in the media just now what Christian fundamentalists are actually capable of.
Wish I’d had a teacher like you.
Open Minded Teacher?
Rarely do we see such an incredible lack of understanding and lack of sensitivity in relation to such a sad atrocity.
Thankfully there are very few people in the world that carry out such things.
They are very misguided and mentally unstable.
Use a bit more common sense and some thought before blogging on such matters please!
Iain, while I totally agree with your stance against homophobes I have a problem in reconciling the fact that ex MP David Chaytop was jailed for fraudulently claiming £20,000 in expenses while at the same time David Laws who claimed £40.000 to conceal his sexuality is commiserated with and is expected to be back in government before the end of this parliament.
Am I being too logical?
On my logical tract how do the un-accompanied psalm singers lobby reconcile their stance with psalm 150?
Pedant
I think David Laws is an example that proves a rule. However much it was difficult for him to be honest, there is no way he should be rewarded for deceit and fraud. He should have been punished and severely.
I had heard that Psalm 150 is one that the latest Free Church breakaway won’t even acknowledge. They are like so many others basing their entire beliefs on Pik ‘n’ Mix religion. Pathetic.
Iain
Iain X, what is behind your ‘obsession’ with gays and the Free Church – you seem ‘driven’ almost in a ‘sickly’ way by both. Try leaving them for a while, your blog may just become interesting again……….. as you’ve been a real bore lately!
Pat – yu are entitled to your opiion but what some of us see as sickly is the narrow mindedness of that church and others. We need someone to say that it is not okay for them to spreading such wickedness,Thank you Iain/
The level of intolerance by certain groups on these islands towards people who are different or express an opinion can be quite extreme and illogical, more so than you find on the mainland. A lot of this is down to narrow mindedness and preconceived ideas. This blog offers an opportunity to influence mind sets and yes there is a danger of becoming narrow minded like those who are being taken to task. Having pointed out a negative about these islands there are ten positive points for every negative issue.
I just had a thought, if you don’t want other people having sex in your home, gay or straight, then don’t open up a B&B.
The writer also says that ‘homophobia does not mean a hatred of homosexuals. In my case, it’s an inner revulsion and incomprehension to understand their behaviour’.
A phobia is a morbid fear of something, so basically he is scared of homo’s and doesn’t want ‘them’ in his home and is repulsed by anything he does not understand.
There are so many things wrong with this article it would take all day to list them.
B&B owners have the right to turn anyone away, gay or straight. But homosexuality is against the owners Christian beliefs so I can see how it would be difficult for them to accept a homosexual couple into their home. For how long people actually stay in a B&B at one time, is it not possible to just keep the snake in the cage? After all, it is someone else’s house!
That goes for straight couples too!
This has been covered already, when you open a BB your house is no longer private and have to follow the law. Refusing a couple because they are gay is illegal. You have to give a reason when asked.
The sad thing at the end of the day is that the Uig postie hasn’t learned anything.
I see the UIG lunatic is back at it again on Heb News slagging off a young woman whose letter contained a lot of common sense. The world is wrong and he is right.
Everyone deserves the same rights as everyone else. Fact! Yes everyone can have their opinion, bigoted or otherwise but you cannot deny one individual the right to e.g. marry when others in society can, it is wrong. We all pay the same taxes and unless you break the law all have the same rights until that point. As for religion…the number of church goers has declined 70% in the last 25 years. Not because the devil is reaching into the minds of today’s people but because people are tired of all the hatred and squabbling it breeds. You preach acceptance, forgiveness, charity, eradicate poverty, eradicate war and you can’t even agree with each other to prevent petty squabbling amongst yourselves over something like hymns. Then half of you decide to ignore for example psalm 150 and you expect others to trust you!? Laughable.
If you were born a few hundred years ago you have condemned those who thought the world was round and the universe itself did not revolve around the earth because you blindly follow those who guide you and the inherent bias they allow into their preaching. Nowadays these medieval religious fanatics who imprisoned Galileo are laughed at for their ignorance and soon you too will be laughed at by future christians who accept LGBT individuals for who they are and how they were born. Maybe then numbers of churchgoers will even increase again when a true message of tolerance and love it finally preached.
PS I’m gay and religious and come from lewis. I know god loves me and everyone who chooses to follow him. Do I believe I should be able to marry in a church? Yes. Do I therefore believe that ministers should be forced to do it or be branded ignorant? No, because I know you haven’t caught up with society and do not want to upset you or the church. Do you really believe so many people would “choose” to be gay, especially 30 years ago for example. Choose to be spat on, shouted homophobic abuse at, kicked, beaten up, murdered, just to be different. What would you say to the parents of children in schools who did nothing about homophobic bullying? We’re sorry for your loss, that your son/daughter was murdered/took their own life, but your child shouldn’t have “chosen” to be gay, he/she should have known it was a possibility. Maybe we should replace anti homophobic bullying literature in school with leaflets that warn of the risks? If you “choose” this lifestyle you may end up “choosing” to kill yourself or may be at risk of being beaten so badly you will enter a persistent vegetative state or have your throat slit. Shame on you.
You cause LGBT individuals so much pain and you can’t acknowledge it. Finally, another example of how you are usually behind society you used to preach that suicide was a sin. Mental illness is NOT preventable and you allowed families to believe their children, husbands, wives had condemned themselves to an eternity in hell until you caught up with the science that proved it was no more preventable than cancer or the cold.
When these threads were being discussed I had no doubt in my mind that soon the arguments would be mute with a decision on same sex marriage, and full equality for all, with adequate protection for religious freedom.
Today that has indeed occurred with the Scottish Government announcing that same sex marriage would become legal with, rightly so, protection for religious groups wishing not to conduct them and the choice to perform same sex marriage for those who do. Out of the 77,000 responded 64% disagreed and when the 40,000 (out of a total of 500,000 posted to households) Catholic Church, fill in your name postcards were excluded, 65% approved. Nicola Sturgeon also acknowledged the vast majority of polls which showed majority support for same sex marriage. She also announced an amendment to the Equality Act to ensure that religious institutions would not be forced to perform them. At the end of the day sense has prevailed, and equality has been achieved for ALL parties involved. LGBT individuals will have the right to marry, to marry religiously, and religious institutions will be free to choose not to and Faith Schools will be free to exclude education on the matter from their curriculum.
