Harris ferry bust

It’s another day of travel turmoil in the islands – this time not due to weather.

The ferry Hebrides is still broken and remains in Tarbert where engineers are trying to fix it. It’s turned into a big job, though. Now traffic and passengers have been sent to Stornoway where the relief vessel, the Isle of Arran, will take them from Stornoway to Uig.

Any overspill of traffic from Tarbert will be taken from Stornoway to Ullapool on the lunchtime 1.50pm sailing of the ferry Isle of Lewis.  CalMac advises all intending passengers  to contact their port of departure before setting off.

One of the men accused of murdering a teenager on Lewis in the Western Isles has been released on bail. Stefan Miller, 20, from Carloway, was initially remanded in custody when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court earlier this month.

He and 21-year-old Jonathan Mackinnon, from Stornoway, are accused of the murder of 16-year-old Liam Aitchison. The teenager was found dead in a derelict building on the outskirts of Stornoway in November.

Mr Mackinnon and Mr Miller made no plea or declaration when they appeared in accused of murder.  Liam Aitchison’s funeral is due to take place on Friday at Daliburgh in South Uist.

The Free Presbyterians confirm what we all knew – they are all bonkers and they really hate Christmas

More than 10 years ago, I asked the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland if it was true that they preached from the pulpit that no one should celebrate Christmas. I knew it was the case because my informant was an appalled attender who had decided to quit after an attempt to brainwash his children.

The FPs waffled for days and claimed there was no spokesman available, there was no formal order to ignore Christmas, there was no ban on people doing what they wanted and there was no reason why they should tell anyone what they thought. How things have changed.

As membership of these sects dwindles in our latter-day age of enlightenment, the leaders get desperate as they lose their power to petrify. This week they are not just confirming how much they hate Christmas to anyone who will listen but also gaily flinging statements around to the media.

The Outer Isles Presbytery said: “There is no authority in the Word of God for the religious observance of Christmas or any other so-called holy day. In the main, these celebrations are worldly and contrary to the religion of the Bible, being derived from paganism and superstition.”

That first sentence? So no one should observe the Sabbath. Is that what they’re saying? Who knows? Who cares?

How ironic that they claim Christmas, even it is commercialised and overblown, is based on superstition when the FPs’ own spiteful interpretation of scripture and outright sectarianism is exactly that and completely designed to enslave their deluded followers.

Their carefully-timed presbytery statement – which you can read with all its awful bile and stark hatred on Hebrides News – was all an excuse to attack Roman Catholics, of course. That is the speciality of a nasty little self-righteous bunch which pays no heed whatsoever to Jesus Christ’s solicitation to love and forgive.

At this time of reflection, we should all pray that FPs are forgiven for their membership of such a shameful institution which is so patently based on hate and fear and which can, as families who have tragically lost dear ones to the fanaticism of the sect know only too well, have vast appeal for those who are psychologically vulnerable and mentally unstable.

Please think hard before posting comments

It has become necessary again to remind everyone they may be held responsible for what they write on this and any other blog or website, if there is a complaint.
I can confirm that a complaint has been made to police about a couple of comments recently posted by readers of this blog.
Stornoway Police are currently investigating the matter. Anyone who can help the inquiry may contact Constable Andrew Maciver.

Should we report Free Church (Continuing) for its ghastly and evil “servant of Antichrist” hate crime?

I have had a letter asking me if there would be support for reporting the office-bearers of the Free Church (Continuing) for hate crime after its sectarian attack on the local Roman Catholic priest. I’m not sure.
One thing is sure. There is no way that the Scottish Government can stop sectarian attacks while these deluded people are allowed to stain the character of Scotland with this sham-Christianity.
The proper Free Church “noted” the report and did not reject it. How sad is that? That will probably mean they will lose another family I know from their membership.

Ecumenical service controversy 22/12/11
By Bill Lucas

The presbytery of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) has criticised a Lewis Free Church minister for taking part in what has been described as an “ecumenical service” along with an Roman Catholic priest.

The Continuing has written to the Western Isles Free Church Presbytery expressing their ‘sadness and concern’ about the involvement of the Rev James Maciver of Knock Free Church.

When the issue was raised at the November meeting of the FC Presbytery, Mr Maciver, who is Moderator of the Free Church General Assembly, explained that he had agreed to take part in the service which was to be broadcast on Christmas Eve. He had suggested to BBC Alba that it should not be advertised as an “ecumenical service.”

There were to be a number of items by local groups and choirs. He had been asked to give a four minute talk, the priest was to read a prayer, and the Church of Scotland minister would be reading from the Scripture. It was recorded in Martin’s Memorial Church of Scotland in Stornoway on December 3.

Mr Maciver told the Presbytery that he did not regard it as compromising his theological position or that of the church. It was an opportunity to present the real meaning of Christmas although only in a small time frame of 4 to 5 minutes. He could bring the message to thousands of Roman Catholics and others. He had not been asked to conduct a service.

The Free Church (Continuing) said it was concerned at Rev Maciver’s participation in the event and noted he was involved “in a similar service in October at the opening of this year’s Mod.

‘We respectfully point out that such joint acts of worship, in which the unresolved controversy between Protestantism and Rome concerning the gospel is laid aside and a servant of Antichrist is treated as though he were a fellow-servant of Christ, are an insult to the memory of our reformers and likely to be a stumbling-block and a snare to many who need to be given clear biblical guidance in these days of spiritual confusion and compromise.

‘We urge you for the sake of the Lord’s cause to take appropriate action regarding these events and ensure that they are not repeated.”

The FC Presbytery noted the letter.

Why we will not grit the roads – comhairle

Comhairle Statement

The last few weeks have seen the onset of winter weather and the Comhairle wishes to reiterate its revised policy on gritting and snow-clearing to the travelling and general public.

Chief executive Malcolm Burr said: “A full review of the Comhairle’s Winter Maintenance Policy and Operational Plan was carried out earlier this year, and the Comhairle approved the new Policy and Plan in September.

The service provided in the past was simply no longer affordable and had resulted in significant overspending in the last two years. The policy provided a more enhanced level of service compared to other areas in the north of Scotland, and changes were accordingly necessary.

To summarise the new policy, gritting operations will not start until 0600 with the highest priority routes (Priority 1 and Priority 2) to be completed by 0730 and 0830 respectively with the lower priority routes (Priority 3 and Priority 4) being treated by 0930 and 1030 respectively.  In the event that the gritting of roads is required in the evening, generally only Priority 1 routes will be treated, with an intention of doing so by 1800.  Only under exceptional circumstances will any other routes be gritted in the evening.

On  Sundays and  Local Public Holidays, only Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes will be gritted, in the mornings, starting at 0800 with completion by 0930 and 1030 respectively.  In common with the other days of the week, only Priority 1 routes will be treated by 1800; only under exceptional circumstances will any other routes be gritted in the evening.

Details of the policy and of the routes across the Western Isles are available on the Comhairle’s website at www.cne-siar.gov.uk/techservices/wintermaint.asp.  The public are encouraged to familiarise themselves with how the details of the prioritisation of routes and the target treatment times affect them and their ability to travel to and from their homes.

The Comhairle’s Director of Technical Services, Iain Mackinnon, emphasised that, in accordance with the Comhairle’s legal responsibilities, the Comhairle shall “take steps as they consider reasonable to prevent snow and ice endangering the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles over public roads”.  Mr Mackinnon confirmed that the terms of the Policy constitute what the Comhairle consider to be reasonable and emphasised that the travelling public are responsible for ensuring their own safety and that of their passengers when travelling in such conditions.

“Excellent advice is available from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) website on  www.drivingadvice.org.uk/media/12310/10_10_2011_winter_driving_tips_pdf.pdf; members of the public should be aware of the risks associated with driving in such conditions and change their driving style to suit the conditions.”

He suggested that members of the public should always carefully consider the weather and road conditions prior to any journey and, in certain conditions, ask how essential the journey is.

The above information is also available from Technical Services at the Council Offices in Stornoway, Tarbert, Balivanich or Castlebay for those who do not have access to the internet.

Ofcom is to investigate The Wright Stuff as the number of complaints “grow up” to about 2,200

Wright

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has confirmed to me that it has launched an investigation into comments made on The Wright Stuff about the murder of teenager Liam Aitchison.

On December 6, host Matthew Wright caused widespread offence in the newspaper review slot on his daily chat show The Wright Stuff on Channel 5. He fooled around in a mock-Scottish accent saying “there’s been another murder” as Liam’s story and photo was on screen.

Comedian Charlie Baker joined in joking that the murder investigation was “the longest-ever episode of Taggart”. Wright apologised the next morning for his comments, but, amazingly, told those people who were campaigning to report him to Ofcom to “grow up”.  That then caused even more upset and made up the minds of many people to complain to the broadcasting regulator. That was when Angus Campbell, the leader of Western Isles Council, called for Wright to be sacked.

Baker

After an uproar, and claims that Channel 5 owner Richard Desmond was apalled and about to sack Wright and ban Baker, Wright then apologised again the next day saying there was no intention to belittle the seriousness or the tragedy of this story, or to offend anyone who knew Liam.

He also claimed to have written to Liam’s parents who live in South Uist and on Eriskay.

Ofcom told me that by this evening it had received around 2,200 complaints and the decision had been made to launch an investigation.

DVLA orders me to go to Kyle of Lochalsh

Click above to see the reminder they sent me complete with threat of £1,000 fine if I don't go over the sea to Skye

Maybe we should not be too surprised about the planned closures of DVLA offices. The ones that are there now are a disgrace with late reminders, lost paperwork and attempts to cover up by blaming other people.

The latest person to be targeted by the useless DVLA dingbats is me. They have decided I need to update the photo on my driving licence. Fair enough.  But they insist I can only do it  - in Kyle of Lochalsh.

Let me get this right – I am expected to travel 100 miles, take a day or maybe two off work including a four-hour return ferry journey, just to change the photo on my licence? Yep. Will they reimburse me the estimated travel costs £140 plus loss of earnings which this will cost me? Nope.

My own photos won’t do, apparently, because I don’t have a passport issued in the last five years. Pfft?

Helpfully, DVLA has listed my “nearest participating Post Office branches” – in other words with staff who know how to use a camera. They have sent me a list of two – both of them which are Skyeways in Kyle. What about the two Stornoway post offices? Nah, not good enough, they say. Staff in Stornoway must be too shaky.

I called DVLA and asked them to help me. They would get back to me. That was weeks ago and I’ve heard nothing. My existing photo will “expire” next week.

And our MP wants to stop the DVLA closures? Why? DVLA is currently proving itself to be as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

A troupe of monkeys could do better than what DVLA has done to resolve the needless problems which that agency is now causing me. I only hope our elected representatives will do something to address DVLA’s failings before they make a final decision on its future. I hope you’ll put my thoughts in your consultation, Mr Macneil.

So, to sum up. As well as a £20 upgrade fee, DVLA has also warned me that I will be fined £1,000 and be banned from the road if I do not comply with their barmy instructions which I estimate will cost me about £140 – plus a day or two’s loss of earnings.  And I am being asked to support the organisation responsible for this fiasco? It is time for a clear out, methinks and get it back to basics.

PS – DVLA must be thinking of throwing me in jail. The reminder is from Nadine Davies from its Central Capture Unit.
