Malcolm Wicks

Sorry to hear of the death of former energy minister Malcolm Wicks.  As a new reporter in Croydon, I was introduced to him, then a Labour hopeful, by a union official and councillor who I regularly pestered for yarns, one Peter Spalding.

They would give me their party spiel for my paper and then we would relax in the Labour club and put the world to rights – even though they knew I was closer to the LibDems. I wish more politicians were unconditionally friendly.

Peter became a good pal.  After I said my goodbyes and left Croydon, Malcolm was elected for Croydon North West and Peter went on to become mayor.

Years later, I bumped into Malcolm again in the unlikeliest place – on Cromwell Street in Stornoway. He was here on some visit with our then MP, Calum Macdonald. I think he remembered.

Graffiti daubed on Free Church

A man was detained by police in Stornoway on Friday evening after a church in the town was daubed with graffiti. It followed the appearance of the words “Temple of Evil” in black letters sprayed near the main door of the Free Church of Scotland on Kenneth Street.

Passers-by said police arrived at the church around 6.30pm and a man, thought by the onlookers to be using walking sticks, was taken away. It is not known if he was caught in the act.

A spokeswoman for Stornoway Police confirmed a man had been detained following an incident at the church, which is thought to have one of the largest congregations in the country. She said inquiries were ongoing.

The minister, Reverend Iver Martin, who is currently on sick leave, said: “It’s very sad.”  Church volunteers were hard at work later scrubbing off the words which several locals said they found “offensive”.

David Cameron on Letterman

I have been asked to post David Cameron’s interview on The Letterman Show. Good history lesson and an embarrassing moment or two, apparently. No probs.

Stupid thieves have been targeting VW Golfs on Benbecula. Wonder what car they are driving?

Police in the Uists are appealing for help to catch to catch some dozy thieves on Benbecula after two thefts there last weekend which may be linked.

Between 11am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday, a spare wheel was stolen from the boot of a Volkswagen Golf parked outside the owner’s house in Liniclate. The spare was a full-size 15-inch steel wheel.

In another incident, between 3.30pm on Friday 8.30pm on Sunday, all four wheel trims were stolen from another Volkswagen Golf car parked in the long-term car park at Benbecula Airport. The silver-coloured VW-branded wheel trims taken are compatible with steel 15-inch wheels. Surprise surprise.

One model of Golf

Unfortunately for the bungling boys behind the thefts, Constable Adrian Kay of Benbecula Police Station is on the case. He said: “These two thefts occurred over the same weekend and the items stolen relate to the same make and model of car and also the same wheel size. We ask anyone who may have information about these incidents, or who are aware of anybody selling these items, to come forward.”

He and his colleagues want to speak to the people spotted in a dark-coloured hatchback car which was actually spotted driving into the airport car park around 12.40pm on Sunday. They may have information about the incidents.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Benbecula Police Station on 01870 602374 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken by CrimeStoppers and information is not traced so you will not have to go to court to give evidence.

Stornoway filling stations respond as Gordon Diesel declares himself “proud” to help us all by slashing his fuel prices by 9p per litre

UPDATE – Engebret and Campbell’s fillling stations have now cut their fuel prices by 3p per litre. Other reports of price movement gratefully received.

An island filling station stunned and delighted locals by suddenly slashing the price of petrol and diesel by 9p per litre.

Proprietor Gordon Maclennan, who runs Gordon Diesel Services Ltd at Back, would only say he had changed his fuel supplier and was proud to be able to pass on the savings to islanders.

Callum Ian examines Gordon’s prices

There are already claims by local business figures that a fuel price war could be about to begin. One said: “The other filling stations will fear losing trade as motorists, already fed up of the ongoing rip-off, head to Back to fill up.”

Although he was not prepared to go into detail about what had led up to the price cut, Gordon confirmed his filling station, six miles out of Stornoway, was now selling unleaded petrol at 139.9p per litre and diesel at 143.9p.

Local fuel price campaigners Fair Fuel Solutions hailed the unexpected price cut as a major development in their fight to cut the price difference between island pumps and ones in mainland towns and cities.

Petrol is currently about 14p a litre more expensive in Stornoway than at comparable independent outlets in Inverness and Dingwall.

FFS has already made a submission to the Office of Fair Trading asking for an urgent investigation into alleged “profiteering” by the dominant distributor, Scottish Fuels, part of the Irish-based DCC oil giant.

After filling up at Gordon Diesel Services, Callum Ian Macmillan, spokesman for FFS, said he was delighted at the price he was charged.

“Only last week, Scottish Fuels were showing how much they cared for the islands by imposing wartime-style fuel rationing in the Uists.  This week, other companies and individuals with a sense of responsibility for these islands are showing how customer care should really be done. This is fantastic,” he said.

He called on all islanders to support Mr Maclennan’s company.

Don’t mention the war. Cruel failures by Scottish Fuels mean islands of Uist and Barra forced into the same kind of awful fuel rationing they had in 1942.

A string of failures by Scottish Fuels has resulted in the same type of fuel distribution in Uist and Barra as they had in during World War II. What should be done? Here are Callum Ian Macmillan and Frank Burns from Fair Fuel Solutions.

Missing Hungarian student is ‘still here in the islands’

Update: The body of a man has been found under cliffs on the coast between Dalbeg and Dalmore. Family of missing man informed.

THE father of a Hungarian student missing on a Scottish island since going on a camping trip in the Outer Hebrides has flown from Budapest to Stornoway to help look for his son.

It has also emerged that police have been following up possible sightings of Tamás Gádor, 27, on the Isle of Harris. On Friday night, Stornoway police said they were of the view that he is still in the islands.

Have you seen missing Tamás?

Tamás is thought to have travelled to Stornoway last Sunday but was reported missing on Wednesday when he failed to return to his accommodation after saying he was going to camp out for a night.

His family say they are still very concerned that the student of andragogy, which involves engaging adult learners, had not been in touch with his sister Krizstina since an email on Sunday in which he said he was on the way to Lewis.

Tamas was booked to fly back to Budapest on Wednesday this week but did not board the flight.

In a statement, police said: “His last confirmed sighting was in the Stornoway area but there have been possible sightings in the Isle of Harris and it is suspected that he is still in the Western Isles.”

They also confirmed his father Peter had travelled from Hungary “to assist police with their enquiries”.

Tamás is described as being six feet in height, of slim build, neck-length dark hair, with an Abraham Lincoln-style beard with no moustache. He was last seen wearing a distinctive bright green waterproof jacket, light-coloured trousers, walking boots and carrying a large rucksack.

He had a dome tent with a red rain cover and police have asked people to look out for it as it is also distinctive. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to contact Stornoway Police on 01851 702222.

Calm down, everyone. Scottish Fuels may get round to fixing “issues” with the Uist fuel tanks in about a week’s time or thereabouts, depending on the tides and whether there is anything good on the telly.

Angus Macneil MP has phoned up Sam Chambers of Scottish Fuels regarding the fuel shortages in Uist and Barra.

He said: “I have spoken to Scottish Fuels who have confirmed that this fuel shortage is a result of issues with the holding tanks and travel difficulties.

“Scottish Fuels confirmed that they are actively trying to resolve this problem and that they are using road tankers from Stornoway to assist with this in the short-term.  They have also confirmed that the holding tanks at Lochcarnan will be fixed by 27 September.

“Scottish Fuels have assured me that they can cope with supply as long as people buy their normal amounts of fuel.”

UPDATED AGAIN – Sister appeals for help from Lewis people to find missing Hungarian student

UPDATED – Now with recent photo supplied by his sister

A college student from Hungary who has been touring the UK has gone missing in the Western Isles.  Tamás Gádor, who is 27 and from Budapest, was visiting the Stornoway area over the weekend but was reported missing to police there on Wednesday when he failed to return to his accommodation after a night’s camping.

Kryzstina sent this very recent photo of her missing brother. Where is he on Lewis now?

Last night (THURS), his sister Krisztina Gador Meyers, who lives with her family in Ukraine, said her brother was a student at a Hungarian college pursuing a degree in andragogy (engaging adult learners).
.
She said: “He has a wide array of interests, including travelling, photography and acting.”
Her brother had been travelling around the United Kingdom for two months after starting off London.
“We last heard of him on Sunday when he sent us an email about going out camping on the island of Lewis. He was supposed to fly back to Budapest yesterday (Wednesday). “
.
Krisztina said Tamás had never disappeared like this before and she had a message for people in the islands, saying: “Please keep a lookout for him and report if you’ve think you’ve seen him. His family is desperate to have information on his whereabouts.”
.
Their parents also live in Budapest while Krisztina herself lives with her family in Kyiv, Ukraine.
.
Tamás is described as being six feet in height, of slim build, neck-length dark hair, with a beard with but no moustache. He was last seen wearing a bright green waterproof jacket, light-coloured trousers, walking boots and carrying a large rucksack. He had a dome tent with a red rain cover.
.
Island police said it was possible that Mr Tamás made other accommodation arrangements while visiting the area. However, they are keen to speak to him directly, to anyone who has seen a man matching his description or to anyone who knows of his whereabouts on 01851 702222.
