Pump prices drop as two brave Stornoway filling station bosses finally rip up Scottish Fuels contracts

UPDATE - Two Stornoway filling stations have decided to stand up to Scottish Fuels. They have told Tony Stewart to get knotted and that they can manage without his sweeteners – and his threats. We salute them. They have, of course, both now been able to drop their prices with immediate effect.

  1. Still more expensive than Gordon Diesels, Same as before the Stornoway filling stations aren’t willing to give customers a good deal like Gordon is even though they now buy their fuel from the same supplier & get it at the same price.

  2. Lewisman1947… Obviously employed, and never ran your own business. Selling at cost and getting a 5% rebate from the government is not a sustainable way to run any business. Nothing to do with “giving the customers a good deal…. You sell at cost….there will be no business. It will be another business closing its doors…. And that is what The Western Isles needs right now? If you ever decide to start a business, let us know and we will all come and ask you to sell at cost….. Lets see how long you last….. Businesses need profits to run, not rebates!

  3. Not brave, they’ve done the maths and this is better for them. In addition to their petrol sales, I wonder how much the shop takings are down in Engies & Manor Park?

  4. I will continue to fill up my vehicles at Back as Gordon has done the right thing by us. As for the other three in town, especially Campbell’s station, I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

  5. I agree with Guga 100%! (that’s a first I think!)
It was Gordon who got the ball rolling, Gordon who stuck his neck out, and it would be a crying shame for folk to stop supporting him now that town prices have fallen. I’d rather do a 35 mile round trip from Point than support town filling stations again.

  6. Gordon has said since he started selling the cheaper fuel that he is making 3p a litre. Can’t see how him or anyone can run a business by just getting a 5% rebate on fuel. Anyway we have to remember its not Gordons hard work& willing to stand up to the big boys who we have to thank for getting cheaper fuel it’s seemingly our local labour campaigners FFS!! Talk about stealing the glory.

  7. Time to now focus on fuel prices in the Uists and Barra – why are we always the poor relations, at the fag end of the chain of exploitation?

  8. I think applause all round to Gordon’s, FFS and Callum Ian Macmillan

The SNP Do not deserve any credit and as usual Alasdair and Rae are just jumping on the bandwagon…..

  9. Wife and I have committed our selves to the detour to Back to fill up there irrespective of Stornoway prices. Hope all those who supported his efforts are paying him back by continuing to divert to back.

  10. Indeed Paul, I also made the commitment to fill both cars up regularly at Gordon’s and that will continue until he goes out of business as A.M. seems to think!!!??? No sure how that will work A.M. (are you son of N.L.M.?) since he obviously isn’t selling at cost, it’s just Stornoway outlets continue to serve themselves rather than their customers, and as far as I can see there are a lot more filling up in Back and a lot less in Stornoway.

  11. Many people will recall that the MP and MSP were demanding an OFT enquiry into the retailers for many years despite repeated evidence of the thin margins they operated on.

Even when presented with the evidence the MP and MSP are still only superficially involved in advocating action against Scottish Fuels.

Is it just petty jealousy against FFS? Party before constituents?

  12. I really wish that some of you would stop this trying to gain political brownie points. The person who deserves the full credit for bringing down the fuel prices is Gordon, and only Gordon. If you want to bring politics into it then make sure that Gordon is elected to the council next time round, and put pressure on for him to be made the Convenor/Leader (we don’t need both positions). After all, isn’t that what an elected representative is for, to support the people who elect him, not to support some self-seeking political party or politicians.

People’s efforts should now be aimed at ensuring that the rest of the islands also receive fair fuel prices, not squabbling about petty politics. So why don’t all of you start putting real pressure onto your favourite politician/political party to get some action is this regard? Also, why don’t our local political patrties start co-operating on this matter, for the good of the people?

Meanwhile, as many people with cars travel into Stornoway, then make the effort to travel the few extra miles to Back to fill up. This way we can demonstrate to all involved that people power can be a power to deal with.

Further to the people power aspect, I hope we all remember, at the next Comhairle elections, those who stood up for, and spoke out on behalf of the people in this matter; and remember those that said nothing.

  13. “A Gordon for me, a Gordon for me,
    If you’re no a Gordon
    You’re no good to me.”
We urgently need a “Gordon” in the Uists and Barra!

  14. Fully agree with you Guga, Gordon is the one who deserve the credit, even though others try to claim to have done it for him, but its Gordon who has given the inside info regarding pricing, had the balls to stand up to Scottish Fuels by moving supplier & not backing down to their threats. Im sure Gordon himself would tell you it was his owns teams doing not FFS who got the ball rolling with giving Lewis cheaper fuel.

  15. According to my friends in the North, Gordon Diesels were part of the same system that kept fuel prices extortionately high in the islands, even after the 5p decrease in fuel duty, and he only broke ranks in September, after a sustained and spectacularly successful FFS campaign by Callum Iain and his team, with strong support from this Blog.
Is it not time we had a similar decrease in fuel prices in the South?

  16. Sorry to disagree with you Monkey Subsidy, but I don’t think for a minute that the campaign by FFS and or any other individuals or blogs created a pressure that resulted in Gordon’s action. The fact that he was in the same system as the other retailers obviously did not sit comfortably on his shoulders, and he took the action irrespectively which brought the much needed drop in pump prices.

The real issue I have is with the Stornoway Retailers who took no action and all we heard, through the Lewis grapevine (that would be the sour grapevine!) from any of them, was disgruntlement at the actions taken by Gordon. They were deafening in their silence (the leader of CNES in particular), and too slow and to late to respond to ever get my custom back.

That is not to say that FFS, and others are to be praised for the work they have done in putting the spotlight fairly and squarely on Scottish Fuels, and also for their representations on our behalf to both the OFT and the Treasury.

I fully agree with you that it is long overdue for some moves to be made in the South, and it is something that our elected representatives got their fingers out and investigated thoroughly and rapidly.

  17. I agree with most of what you say Mr. Placid!, but I must say that the splendid campaign by FFS, combined with the 5p cut in fuel duty by the Treasury in April, led by Danny Alexander ( A good Uist boy!), which soon disappeared down a fuel black hole. The work that FFS and their pressure on the OFT, and the Treasury, stands in stark contrast with the inaction by our councillors, MP and MSP, who chose to have cosy exclusive meetings with Scottish Fuels and nothing else, including disappearing petitions. I hope FFS keep up the pressure on the OFT to fully investigate the price of fuel over the last 10 years and publish their findings. meanwhile heating oil and Uist and Barra need sorting out.

  18. Add at end of first scentence “, was pivotal in embarrassing retailers into a fair pricing system and genuine competition. Once one jumped the others reluctantly followed, although I understand that the retailer who broke ranks first is still leading the others on price”
